March 2017. National Network of Reference Laboratories for measles and rubella MoRoNet.


March 20, 2017 – March 20, 2017 – The final conference of the CCM project “Towards the elimination of measles and rubella: the establishment of a network of sub-national laboratories (MoRoNet) coordinated by the National Reference Laboratory ” was held at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), with the participation of World Health Organization (WHO), Ministry of Health and National Verification Commission. The topic of the day was the presentation of the newly established MoRoNet network, coordinated by the National Reference Laboratory for Morbillo and Rosolia, created with the aim of strengthening the surveillance of these diseases in our country in line with WHO’s request.

The meeting, introduced by Dr. Fabio Magurano (responsible for the MoRoNet network) and Dr. Loredana Nicoletti (responsible for LNR), dealt with the key role of the laboratory in the framework of the Elimination Plan for Morbillo and Rosolia and the stages that led to the accreditation of regional laboratories enrolled in MoRoNet. The meeting was attended by Dr Myriam Ben Mamou (coordinator of the European Network of Reference Laboratories OMS-LabNet), who illustrated the European epidemiological framework and underlined the importance of the accreditation program and the requirements of the region-wide verification process European. Dr. Paolo Villari (Chairman of the National Verification Committee) expressed the view of the National Verification Committee on the procedures for drafting the national report and outlined the data for last year’s report, pointing out the emerged critical issues. The ministerial aspects and actions undertaken and to be undertaken in relation to the regulatory and media framework in order to guarantee the goals set out in the national plan for the elimination of measles and congenital rubella have been dealt by Dr Stefania Iannazzo (Head of Vaccine Prevention Unit at General Directorate of Health Prevention of the Ministry of Health).

Dr. Nicoletti described the role and activities guaranteed by the LNR, an accredited member of OMS-LabNet, underlining the importance of active laboratory surveillance across the country, whose epidemiological framework was described by Dr Antonietta Filia (ISS) together with the rubella monitoring system in pregnancy.
The presentations of Dr. Magurano and Dr Melissa Baggieri and Antonella Marchi who explained the time-course, the technical aspects and the evaluations that led to the Accreditation of the Network, concluded the first part of the workshop.
The conference was concluded with a round table that involved all the responsible for the Regional Reference Laboratories and officially announced the birth of the National Network of Reference Laboratories for measles and rubella MoRoNet.
